County Fermanagh is the westernmost of the six counties of Northern Ireland, and is predominantly rural in nature. The county is dominated by the two vast lakes of Upper Lough Erne and Lower Lough Erne, but also home to many smaller lakes such as Lough Scolborn, Lough Melvin and Upper and Lower Lough Macnean. As a result, County Fermanagh is often referred to as Ireland's Lake District. Exploring the loughs of County Fermanagh by boat is becoming an increasingly popular activity among visitors, with ferries and cruisers available to hire in the summer. There are also many rivers that dissect the county, such as the Arney, Sillees, Owenbrean, Cladagh, Sruh Croppa, Aghinrawn and the Colebrook River, making County Fermanagh one of the foremost fishing destinations in Ireland. These loughs and rivers stand in stark contrast to the mountains and forests of much of the rest of the county. The mountains of Cuilcagh, Belmore, Brougher, Molly, Benaughlin, Slieve Rushen, Derrin and Slieve Beagh create some of the most ruggedly beautiful vistas in Northern Ireland, while the forests of east and west County Fermanagh are a haven for wildlife. As a result, County Fermanagh is popular with outdoor enthusiasts of all descriptions, from anglers to mountain climbers and cyclists.

However, while County Fermanagh is popular with adventure seekers, it has not as yet become a mainstream tourist destination. As a result, it has retained its old world, traditional atmosphere and offers visitors a taste of authentic Northern Irish life. The largest town of Enniskillen is magnificently set on the shores of Upper and Lower Lough Erne, but has a population of only 11,500 and so boasts an intimate and traditional ambience that visitors never fail to find endearing. But despite its relative low number of visitors, County Fermanagh is awash with fascinating historical and cultural monuments, harking back to its long and illustrious history. The imposing Enniskillen Castle is one of the most magnificent castles in Northern Ireland, while the ancient and mysterious Drumskinny Stone Circle is steeped in myth and legend, making a visit to County Fermanagh one of the most memorable and intriguing imaginable.
