Known as the gateway to the west of Ireland, County Galway is one of the most picturesque areas in the entire country, from the dramatic beauty of the west coast, to the green pastures and gorgeous rural environment of the east, attracting visitors from far and wide to marvel at its natural beauty and catch a glimpse of the real Ireland. In terms of both landscape and culture County Galway is clearly divided into east and west by Lough Corrib. To the west of the lake is the region of Connemara, dominated by the rocky mountains of the Twelve Bens. This is one of the most arresting natural environments in all of Ireland and offers visitors some of the finest opportunities for outdoor activities to be found anywhere. Irish continues to be spoken by many people in the Connemara region which, despite making communication more difficult, makes it one of the most intriguing areas of Ireland, where many continue to lead a traditional way of life that defies the march of the 21 st century.
East of Loigh Corrib, meanwhile, the landscape changes dramatically. Visitors will find lush green pastures and one of the most sedate and peaceful rural environments to be found anywhere in the world. But County Galway is far from being simply a rural idyll, with admittedly stunning vistas. It is one of the most culturally rich areas in Ireland, with Galway City being referred to as the country’s unofficial arts centre, hosting both the internationally renowned Galway Arts Festival and the Barbaro Children's festival. As a result, it boasts a buzzing, cosmopolitan ambience typically only found in much larger cities. Indeed, so much of County Galway is just crying out to be explored. Towns such as Ballinasloe and Gort boast a charming, antiquated atmosphere all of their own, while the villages of Spiddal and Clifden offer a rare glimpse of Ireland that seems to hark back centuries. So from the sedate, rural idyll of the Irish speaking heartland, to its breathtaking scenery and the buzzing, cosmopolitan hub of Galway City, County Galway is a place to visit like no other.
