Aside from Galway there are few towns of considerable size in County Galway. As a result, the opportunities for mainstream shopping outside of Galway City are fairly limited. Some major retailers do have a presence in smaller towns, but by and large retail outlets are of a smaller, independent nature, selling a variety of local crafts and produce.
However, as the regional capital of the west of Ireland, Galway City offers visitors one of the finest opportunities for shopping in all of Ireland. Many of the shops are located around Eyre Square, Dominick Street and Shop Street, and in addition to mainstream retail outlets many smaller, independent stores and boutiques offer a variety of locally produced gifts and antiques. Most of Galway’s shopping streets are pedestrianised, permitting shoppers to take their time and casually browse some of the most unique retail outlets in the country. |
