Bordered by Dublin to the west, County Kildare covers hundreds of miles of open grasslands, verdant green pastures and large tracts of ancient bogland. It’s lush but largely flat landscape make for some of the most serene vistas in all of Ireland and make it the perfect destination for a host of leisure activities. The county is famous for its golf courses, of which perhaps the two finest are the Smurfit Course and the Palmer Course, designed by golf legend Arnold Palmer.
County Kildare ’s wide open plains have also made it synonymous with horse racing, and is home to not only the Irish National Stud, but also to some of the biggest meetings in Ireland’s racing calendar. All five Classic Races − the Boylesports Irish 1000 and 2000 Guineas, Budweiser Irish Derby, Darley Irish Oaks and Irish Field St Leger − are all run in County Kildare, making it one of the world’s leading venues for horse racing. Perhaps the best way to explore the majestic beauty of County Kildare is by boat or barge along its network of canals and rivers that dissect this most verdant of landscapes. Cruising down the rivers Barrow and Liffey is becoming increasingly popular with visitors, permitting them to see and experience not only its panorama of gentle rolling hills and lush pastures, but also the abundant flora and fauna that make County Kildare so revered.
But the appeal of County Kildare is not limited to its rare natural beauty, as it boasts some of the richest heritage in all of Ireland. The county is closely associated with St Brigid, one of Ireland’s patron saints who founded an early Christian church and monastery in Kildare and played a key role in spreading Christianity throughout Ireland. County Kildare is also home to a number of other historic and pre-historic monuments, making it one of the most fascinating and mysterious destinations in the country. So whether visitors want to explore the rural beauty of County Kildare’s gentle rolling hills and plains, party in the buzzing hubs of Kildare and Newbridge, or play golf on some of the finest courses in the world, County Kildare never fails to disappoint.
