Located in the north west of Northern Ireland, County Londonderry enjoys some of the most breathtaking scenery found in the entire island of Ireland. From the Sperrin Mountains in the south west to the spectacular Causeway Coast to the north, County Londonderry is truly a land of contrasts. As a result of its natural beauty, visitors to County londonderry can participate in an array of outdoor activities from some of the finest golfing in the world, to hill walking, canoeing and fishing. But for many it is the county’s long, if somewhat troubled, history that forms the greatest attraction. County Londonderry is one of the longest continually inhabited areas in Ireland. St Columba founded a monastery on the banks of the River Foyle in 546 AD and, as a result, boasts some of the most magnificent historical and archaeological sites anywhere in the UK or Ireland.

In more recent times, County Londonderry was one of the key flashpoints of the Troubles, giving rise to the civil rights movement in Northern Ireland in the 1960s. Many clashes between the Provisional IRA and government forces took place in the county, most notably Bloody Sunday on January 30 th 1972, when 13 unarmed protestors were shot and killed by British troops. This incident was one of the most significant and influential events in the entire history of the Troubles and is still remembered by many throughout Northern Ireland to this day. However, today County Londonderry has largely overcome the political and social divisions of yesteryear, and is rapidly emerging as one of the premier tourist destinations in Northern Ireland. As well as the pretty, vibrant, hilltown of Londonderry, or Derry, itself, many of the county’s charming towns and villages have retained their original character and ambience, making them a joy to explore. The beautiful Georgian town of Limavady is worthy of particular note, offering visitors a warm welcome in this most genteel of towns.

So from its rare natural beauty to its fascinating yet brutal history, County Londonderry is a destination that continues to draw visitors back time and again.
