County Meath is an archaeologist’s paradise, with a history stretching back thousands of years into myth and legend. The county was formerly the territory of the High Kings of Ireland, gaining the moniker the Royal County in the process, while its abundance of historic monuments testifies to the central role the county has played throughout history. One of the mightiest Anglo-Norman castles in Europe can be found at Trim one the upper stretches of the Boyne River, while Megalithic tombs predating the Pyramids of Giza and Stonehenge can be found at Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth, attracting visitors from all over the world. The Boyne Valley, in which County Meath lies, is also an area of magnificent natural beauty. The county is largely flat, lending itself to vast tracts of rich farmlands watered by the Boyne, Blackwater and their tributaries. As well as being one of the most beautifully tranquil stretches of waterways in Ireland, it is also one of the most historic. The legend of the Boyne, featuring Fionn MacCumhall and the Salmon of Knowledge, is still told today, making it a magical place steeped in myth. Its flat landscape and scenic waterways have also made County Meath a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts of all descriptions. The rivers Boyne and Blackwater attract countless anglers and water sports fans every year, while its vast plains and gently sloping hills are perfect for cycling and horse riding.

Indeed, County Meath’s landscape is so perfect for horse riding it has become one of the leading locations for racing in Ireland. The National Hunt and Flat racing has been held regularly at Fairyhouse, also home of the Irish Grand National, and Bellewstown for more than 300 years. Proudstown Park is one of the premier tests for National Hunt horses, while Laytown is one of the most unique racing events using the beach as a track. But while County Meath may be a place of great natural beauty and historical significance, the major towns of Navan and Trim are also worth a visit, offering a rather more worldly experience. Navan boasts a buzzing cosmopolitan ambience that belies its relative small size, while the Medieval town of Trim, with its imposing castle and collection of ancient sites, is enough to take even the most sceptical visitors’ breath away.
