Located in the north west of Ireland on the Atlantic coast, County Sligo enjoys one of the most magnificent natural settings of any region of Ireland, with a stunning range of lakes, mountains woodlands and coastline. Its rare natural beauty is such that the famous Irish poet WB Yeats spent much of his life here, finding inspiration for some of his greatest works from the stunning County Sligo countryside. Indeed, the striking contrast of County Sligo’s still waters with the rugged beauty of the Ox Mountains to the south and the Dartry Mountains to the north make for some of the most majestic vistas to be found anywhere in Ireland. They have also made County Sligo a premier destination for outdoor activities of all kinds, from surfing to fishing and canoeing.
But County Sligo is not merely a place of spectacular natural beauty, but boasts a long and prestigious history. Evidence of human settlement stretching back into pre-history has been found, with Ireland’s largest Megalithic cemetery to be found at Carrowmore. The Neolithic cairn atop Knocknarae, meanwhile, known locally as Queen Maeve’s grave, is another striking landmark. In later history, County Sligo was settled by the Vikings, who established the town of Sligo itself. Sligo is home to several buildings of 13 th century construction, such as the abbey and castle, reflecting to key role it has played throughout Irish history.
Today Sligo’s fine collection of bars, restaurants, theatres and art galleries has made it a cultural hub of the north west. As a result, visitors to County Sligo simply must make the trip to this attractive town, boasting a heritage stretching back over 6,000 years. So from the spectacular coastal vistas of the Atlantic coast, to its rich heritage and the buzzing hub of Sligo itself, it is little wonder that visitors to County Sligo come back time and again.
