Although Durham city centre is compact, with intimate lanes and atmospheric narrow streets, there are plenty of opportunities for shopping. There is a wide range of shops, from fascinating specialist shops through to the big High Street names that you would expect of a city centre. Much of Durham’s shopping area is closed to traffic, which makes for a more pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. Durham is a traditional market town, and the attractive cobbled Market Place is the centrepiece of the city’s shopping area. Durham Market and Durham Indoor Market are well established as mainstays of the city’s retail economy, and a monthly Farmers’ Market is a welcome new addition to the events calendar. With two modern shopping centres: Milburngate Shopping Centre and Prince Bishops Shopping Centre, Durham certainly tries its best to cater for all tastes.
