Eastbourne was developed
by the 7th Duke of Devonshire when he inherited
the small village in 1834. He wanted to
build something totally different from the
extrovert gaiety of nearby Brighton, and
created an elegant place with fine parks
and gardens, wide tree-lined roads and grass
in long, trim stretches. Eastbourne owes
much to the Victorians who laid out many
parks and gardens, as well as the building
of the pier.
Eastbourne seaside resort has an excellent
range of activities, sports and events to
enjoy in a fantastic setting. Everything
is within easy reach, with the seafront
promenade virtually leading straight on
to the foot of Eastbourne downs, the town
centre just a few yards from the centrally
located Victorian pier. The East Sussex
coastline is a designated Area of Outstanding
Beauty. The chalk cliffs of Beachy Head
stand out magnificently from the English
Channel with a walkers route along the cliff
tops called the Peace Path.
Whether you’re visiting this beautiful
seaside town for a holiday or just for the
day, Eastbourne offers a superb range of
outdoor activities and attractions. The
town has one of the top sunshine records
and has been awarded the Seaside Award for
it's clean and safe beaches for the past
eight years.
