East Lothian borders the City of Edinburgh, Midlothian and the Scottish Borders and overlooks the Firth of Forth. The southern boundary is formed by the rugged, rolling, beautiful heather-clad Lammermuir Hills, immortalised in Donizetti’s opera, Lucia di Lammermoor. They link with the Moorfoot Hills in the west, and run to the coast between St. Abbs Head and Cockburnspath.
East Lothian has a superb beach coastline with excellent walks and water sports, and the area is perfect for golfers. Its 19 courses include the championship course at Muirfield and a variety of historic, modern, traditional links and inland golf courses. Clubhouses are welcoming and green fees reasonable.
The region’s largest town is Musselburgh, home to the well-known racecourse; the administrative centre is the smaller, attractive town of Haddington, built around twin market areas and containing Scotland's largest parish church. Dunbar on the east coast is the birthplace of John Muir, who founded National Parks in the USA. The town is built around its harbour, and lies below the ruins of Dunbar Castle. Further west lies the pretty harbour town of North Berwick, in the shadow of an outcrop of volcanic rock - North Berwick Law – an opposite another in the sea – Bass Rock, which is a seabird sanctuary. Further west in Aberlady Bay is a large nature reserve.
East Lothian has a number of small attractive villages, both along the coast and inland. There are also a number of castles and country houses in the area well worth visiting, such as Dirleton Castle and Tantallon Castle. South west of Haddington, close to Pencaitland and Ormiston, is the Glenkinchie Distillery, open to the public throughout the year. One of the oldest motor museums in the UK can be found near Aberlady; south of North Berwick is the Museum of Flight
