The Elmers Court Hotel and Resort also makes a beautiful setting for wedding ceremonies and receptions.
The New Forest is an area of outstanding natural beauty in the South of England, and the region was finally designated a National Park in 2005, although the history of The New Forest can be traced back much further. The name New Forest is somewhat deceiving, as not only is the region home to some of the UK’s most perfectly preserved ancient woodland, but it is also only partially wooded, the remaining land comprising pastures, heaths and bogs. William the Conqueror christened this part of Hampshire The New Forest in 1079, and it is still largely in the possession of the Crown to this day. It has been used for the hunting of deer for sport since the days of William, but The New Forest has also played an important role in England’s maritime heritage; trees from the woodland were used to construct the mighty ships of the Royal Navy in the shipyards of Portsmouth and Southampton, as well as in countless smaller shipyards along the shores of The Solent. Lymington was one of the most important centres of shipbuilding on the South Coast, and the town grew as a key port and market town, to be defended at all costs against invasion by the French. Lymington today is a busy fishing port and harbour, with everything from tiny dinghies to luxury yachts and the famous Isle of Wight Ferry providing a spectacular view. The historic coastline also offers splendid walks along the tidal salt marshes, much of which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
