Exmoor is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the South West of England. The region was designated a National Park in 1954, in recognition of its unique landscape, natural beauty and ecology and to preserve its special qualities for generations to come. Exmoor National Park is partly in the county of Somerset and partly in the county of Devon, and it is the area’s subtle blend of features that makes it such an appealing place for tourists to visit.

It is certainly not as bleak and desolate as many parts of Dartmoor, yet Exmoor has more than its share of wilderness, remote moorland and brooding, melancholy landscapes. It may not have the chiselled glacial peaks and open expanses of water of the Lake District or the Peak District, but Exmoor is nevertheless splendidly rugged in parts and offers challenging and rewarding terrain for walkers and cyclists to conquer. Not only that, but Exmoor encapsulates the delightful and quintessential English charm of the Cotswolds and the South Downs, with its picture-postcard villages and wonderfully sedate pace of life, as well as –in parts - the wooded splendour of the New Forest. Add to this Exmoor’s breathtaking coastline, with golden beaches, secluded coves and delightful fishing ports dotted along the shore, and it becomes clear that the region’s true charm is its diverse scenery and seemingly ever-changing landscapes. It is a place that is as beautiful in the crisp cold of a winter’s day as it is in the balmy heat of summer. The unique flora and fauna of Exmoor provide a constantly changing kaleidoscope of colour that changes all year round.

Despite its somewhat remote location in the north of Devon and Somerset, Exmoor is remarkably easy to get to via the M5, the A39 and the A361 roads. Access from the rest of the UK is easy, yet once here you can forget about the fast pace of the world outside and immerse yourself in Exmoor’s gentle pace of life. With its stunning scenery, its wealth of fascinating visitor attractions, its selection of excellent hotels and no shortage of superb country inns, village pubs and first rate restaurants, Exmoor is a place you will want to return to time and again.
