Originally built in medieval times, the castle has changed considerably over the centuries, most notably during the 19 th Century when it was given a fairytale castle appearance. The South West Coast Path takes in some of England’s most astonishing and picturesque coastline as it wends its way over 630 miles, from Minehead, around the Devon and Cornwall coasts and finally to Poole in Dorset. Part of the path runs through the Exmoor National Park, and offers an excellent way of taking in the unique scenery, with plenty of stopping places en route.

Cleeve Abbey is situated just outside the Exmoor National Park, in the attractive surroundings of the Washford Valley. The remains of the 13 th Century Cistercian monastery – more formally known as Vallis Florida – stand as a romantic reminder of the abbey’s great history, and feature rare wall paintings, a medieval painted chamber, a timber ceiling and a superbly preserved tiled pavement.

Tropiquaria Animal and Adventure Park can be found near Washford, just outside Exmoor National Park. It offers a great day out for the whole family, with a faithful reproduction of a tropical rainforest indoors. There are all sorts of creatures to see, from birds and turtles to snakes and tarantulas. Arlington Court is just off the A39 between Barnstaple and Exmoor in Devon. It is a handsome stately home set in beautiful grounds; formerly the family home of the Chichesters, it is now maintained by the National Trust. In addition to the house itself, Arlington Court has a large display of horse drawn carriages, and many artefacts of eccentric traveller Rosalie Chichester.

 
 

Tarr Steps

The Tarr Steps are part of a prehistoric pathway, and form a crossing of the River Barle, near the village of Tarr in the south of the Exmoor National Park. They are believed to date from approximately 1000BC, and according to legend the stones, some of which weigh over 5 tons, were placed there by the Devil as part of a bet.

Set in 25 acres of attractive grounds, this fascinating attraction features life-sized animated dinosaurs, including a 40ft Triceratops. There are rides, shows and special displays, as well as an award-winning zoo with a host of creatures, from leopards and meerkats to sea lions and birds of prey.

Set in the picturesque Exmoor village of Dunster, the Dunster Water Mill is of significant historical importance – the site upon which the mill was built was mentioned in the Domesday Book. The 18 th Century mill that stands on the site dates from the 18 th Century, and has been restored and is fully operational.

Exmoor Zoo opened in 1982, and is a popular attraction for families.
