Florence, or Firenze as it is in Italian, is the regional capital of Tuscany in the central part of Italy and is situated on the banks of the river Arno. It has been the centre of artistic development within Europe and many influential pieces can be seen in the city today including David by Donatello which in 1450 was the first nude statue created by a Western artist since classical times.
The skyline of the city is filled with red roofs and domes, and is dominated by the impressive Duomo and Campanile that stand tall amidst the rest of the buildings. Florence has suffered great damage in the 20th century particularly during the Second World War and the floods of 1966. The bombing during the war destroyed all of the bridges over the Arno bar one, which was the Ponte Vecchio built in 1345.

After a long day, taking in the sights of Florence, it is time to dine at one the many excellent restaurants in the city and explore the Tuscan cuisine. Florence has several bars that feature music of varying styles and in some of the more traditional cafés, chocoholics can feed their addiction with gorgeous hot chocolate drinks.
With an average five million tourist each year, Florence in its medieval style has much to offer.
