Set on the shores of Lake Geneva at the foot of the Alps, Geneva is one of the most spectacularly located cities in Europe. It is one of the wealthiest cities in the world and is often referred to as the ‘Protestant Rome’ thanks to the central role the city played in the Reformation. Today its is the home of many international organisations and is regarded as one of the world’s leading cultural centres.Geneva is noted for the first time in Caesar’s Commentaries from the Gallic War. Following his conquest of Gaul between 58 and 51 BC, Geneva became part of the province of Gallia Narbonensis. Despite ownership being contested by the Burgundians, the Franks and the Holy Roman Emperors, in reality Geneva was ruled by its own Prince-Bishops up until the Reformation when Geneva became a republic. It was during this period that Geneva’s political status reached its high watermark. The city was one of the key centres of the Protestant Reformation throughout the 16 th century under the leadership of John Calvin, earning the city the moniker of the ‘Protestant Rome’ in the process. This esteemed history has made Geneva one of the world’s great cultural centres. Indeed, Geneva’s cultural department accounts for almost 20 per cent of the city’s annual budget, a percentage unmatched by any city in Europe. This has ensured that Geneva’s extensive collection of museums, historic churches, art galleries and concert halls are among the finest in the world. But Geneva also boasts a reputation as one of Switzerland’s liveliest and most dynamic cities. Despite being Switzerland’s second-largest city, it is home to more bars and clubs than any other Swiss city, particularly around P lace du Bourg-de-Four and the Old Town.
But while Geneva may be famous as a leading centre of culture and entertainment, it its its natural beauty that proves to be the greatest attraction for visitors. With its majestic lakeside setting, quays, green parks and narrow alleways with the Alps just a stone’s throw away, Geneva is a haven of unspoiled nature and truly breathtaking scenery.
