Magnificently located between the parliament building and the Royal Palace on Oslo's main thoroughfare, the famous Karl Johans Gate, the Grand Hotel Oslo is one of the Norwegian capital’s landmark buildings. Constructed in Louis XVI revival-style, the Grand Hotel Oslo first opened its doors in 1874, making it one of Oslo’s most historic hotels. The hotel has hosted many of the world’s most famous figures, including heads of state, Nobel Peace Prize winners, and other well-known figures from the worlds of business and entertainment. Decorated with Nordic art nouveau, the hotel has been modernised and extended over the years, but has nevertheless retained its reputation for tradition, atmosphere and style. Nearby lie many of Oslo’s most famous sites, as well as the harbour and the Oslofjord.

This combination of history, style and comfort has made the Grand Hotel Oslo one of the city’s most famous and popular hotels. All 290 rooms, including 52 suites, are beautifully furnished and feature all the modern amenities today’s travellers demand. These include en-suite bathrooms, TV and direct-dial telephones. Many rooms also have parquet floors, while others have balconies offering spectacular views of the city. The Grand Hotel’s selection of 52 suites is more impressive still. Individually decorated and equipped with every luxury, many even have their own special names. Every year the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize stays at the Nobel Suite on the second floor and traditionally walks out onto the balcony to wave at the cheering crowd below. These high standards are maintained by the hotel’s range of in-house restaurants and bars, where a leading selection of Norwegian and international cuisine can be found. The Grand Café was once favoured by Henrik Ibsen, Norway’s most eminent playwright. Serving the largest buffet in Norway, the Grand Café is an elegant and refined establishment. Julius Fritzner is a gourmet restaurant, named after the hotel’s founder. The restaurant is regarded as one of Norway’s finest places to eat, serving seasonal menus and the freshest produce. Palmen is an English-style restaurant serving classic British fare. Palmen is one of the most traditional lunch restaurants in Oslo, enjoying a laid-back and informal ambience under the glass dome. Lighter snacks and meals can be ordered in Limelight and Etoile Bar.
