Part of The South Downs can be found in Hampshire. The rolling chalk hills stretch for over 100 miles between Winchester in Hampshire, through West and East Sussex, and finally to the western outskirts of Eastbourne. Aldershot is the Home of the British Army, and this interesting museum is also based in the town, having been opened in one of the last surviving barracks bungalows in North Camp in 1984. There is a fascinating collection of exhibits and recreations detailing the history of the army in Aldershot since the 1850s, and there are also exhibitions of local history and of aviation history.

Highclere Castle is a beautiful Victorian Castle – one of the finest examples in the UK – and is situated a few miles south of Newbury, on the Hants-Berks border. It has been the home of Lord and Lady Carnarvon since the late 17 th Century, and the castle and the surrounding parkland make a great family day out. A programme of special events runs throughout the summer months.

Silchester Atrebatum is situated in North Hampshire, and is a site of considerable historic importance. It was inhabited successively by Iron Age settlers and the Romans, and became an important fortified town on the Roman road network. Although abandoned and ruined, large sections of the walls remain, as well as an amphitheatre.
