Hanover is situated in the northern part of Germany in the state of Lower Saxony and on the banks of the River Leine as it winds its way up to the north of the country. The city is a major hub of industry and is one of the world’s leading exhibition cities. It hosts some 60 annual national and international exhibitions with a particular focus on transportation and commerce. It also plays host to the world’s largest annual trade fair for industrial technology – the Hanover Fair.
The city is actually the capital of Lower Saxony and with a population of 525,000 is the 11th most populated city in the country. Adding further weight to Hanover’s reputation, the city hosted the major world fair – Expo - in the year 2000.
Hanover is more than simply a conference and exhibition centre however. It has an array of attractions, sights, museums, theatres and places to eat and drink. Uniquely, known as the Red Thread, there is a 4.2 kilometre red line painted along the streets which connects together the city’s 36 most important sites. There are also some festivals such
as the Oktoberfest, the Schützenfest which is an annual marksmen’s fun fair and the Maschseefest which is held each summer by the Maschsee Lake.
There are no fewer than 40 theatres to choose from when visiting the city, while there is also the Leibniz University Hanover, a medical school and a large zoo. Protected by UNESCO are a series of letters from and to Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz as well as some other manuscripts. There are approximately 50,000 items in total which were brought under UNESCO’s memory of the world programme in 2007.
A major landmark in the city is that of the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen with their history and beauty. The Old Town is also worth a visit and features the likes of the Market Church and the Old Town hall. Meanwhile, an impressive new Town Hall was built at the beginning of the 20th century which is also seen as one of the city’s top landmarks and attractions. Among the museums are the Historic Museum and the Kestner Gesellschaft art museum, while Hanover is also home to the European Cheese Centre.
