The Promenade Room which now houses Harrogate's Mercer Art Gallery has a long history . Completed in 1806, it stands as Harrogate's oldest spa building. It was first constructed as a promenade room to accommodate the large numbers of visitors coming to Harrogate to take the waters from the sulphur wells now housed in the Royal Pump Room. The Gallery building has experienced a number of transformations, including life as a theatre where some great Victorian personalities performed including Oscar Wilde and Lily Langtry.

Site of original sulphur well (the strongest well in Britain), visitors can sample the spa waters, also history of the 'Queen of the Inland Spas' with a programme of changing exhibitions. Harrogate was the place to see and be seen - It was said that there could have been a meeting of the cabinet in the Pump Room because so many members of the government visited Harrogate during the season.

The castle and gardens are open to the public all year round and make a really interesting and entertaining day out. There is ample free parking in the very pleasant car park at the southern edge of the village, and from there it is a very short walk through the market square to the castle entrance, which can be found in the Castle Gift Shop. Toilet facilities (including disabled and baby changing) are available at the car park and at the Gift Shop on arrival.
