The Cathedral Church of St Mary the Virgin and St Ethelbert the King occupies a central location in the city, overlooking the River Wye. There has been a place of worship on the site currently occupied by Hereford Cathedral since the 9th Century, although he current building is a remarkable example of Norman architecture with a number of additions and alterations made over the centuries. The cathedral contains a 13th Century Mappa Mundi in its superb library.

The Black and White Village Trail is a pleasant circular drive taking in some of these quaint places in Herefordshire; starting in Leominster, the trail takes in Dilwyn, Weobley, Kinnersley, Eardisley, Kington and Pembridge amongst others. The Lion Gallery can be found in the historic town of Leominster, and since opening in 1995 has showcased the contemporary crafts and fine artworks of artists from Herefordshire and the Welsh Borders. A fascinating collection of jewellery, ceramics, glass, textiles, original prints, photographs and paintings are joined by a programme of frequently changing special exhibitions.

Weston’s Cider is one of the UK’s most famous cider makers, and has been producing its range of cider and perry at its brewery in Much Marcle for over 125 years. ‘The Bounds’ is a 400 year old farm house amidst the apple and pear orchards, and here you will find the Weston’s Visitors’ Centre, where visitors can gain an insight into how Weston’s operate, as well as taking in the garden and museum, tea rooms, and meeting the dray horses.

Hampton Court is a superbly preserved castle on the banks of the River Lugg in Herefordshire, and is set amidst over 1000 acres of woodland and gardens. Originally founded by Henry IV, the elegant 15th Century castle has been restored and is open to the public. The Van Kampen Gardens are also worth a visit, and the 12 acres of flowers, plants and shrubs are recognised as one of the UK’s best new gardens.

Eastnor Castle is a superb castle near Ledbury in Herefordshire, in the wonderful Malvern Hills, and is the family home of the Hervey-Bathursts. Although Norman in appearance, Eastnor Castle actually dates from 1810 and took 10 years to complete. Today it is a popular venue for weddings and corporate events, and guided tours are available, as well as access to the castle’s beautiful grounds.
