Hertfordshire has
some excellent attractions for tourists
and residents to visit. It is also an excellent
location to explore other parts of England,
being just 30 minutes train journey from
central London and about a 1 hour drive
from Cambridge and Oxford. Hertfordshire
is also very nearby to London Heathrow,
London Luton and London Stansted airports.
Old houses from Jacobean to the Georgian
periods mingle well with new buildings in
this old county town, where The River Lee
(or Lea) runs through Hertford on its way
to London and it is joined in Hertford by
three other rivers, the River Mimram, the
River Beane and the River Rib. Little remains
of the old Norman castle except for the
charming 15th century gatehouse, one of
the charming homes of Elizabeth 1, standing
in pleasant parkland. At the heart of the
town are the famous old buildings of Christ’s
hospital school in London.
The county town’s situation, remote
from main through roads, has left it comparatively
unspoilt. There was a settlement on the
site long before the Romans, and there are
the ruins of a Norman castle on the site
of an earlier Saxon stronghold, built to
protect London from the Danes. The town
has a Victorian corn exchange, as well as
handsome buildings. The shire hall, which
stands in the middle of the town was built
in 1769 and was designed by Robert AdamA
canal called the Lee Navigation runs south
from Hertford and barges can be hired for
pleasure use. There are many good walks
along the rivers and canals in and around
Hertford.
