St Albans

Royston

Royston is a small market town in the far north of Hertfordshire, close to the Cambridgeshire border. It stands at the junction of the Roman Ermine Street and the much more ancient Icknield Way.

Letchworth

Letchworth Garden City – the town’s full name – was one of the UK’s first new towns, there having been very little of note here prior to 1903. Today Letchworth is a rapidly expanding town with excellent access via the A1(M).

Hitchin

Hitchin is an historic market town in Hertfordshire, and was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Its location on the ancient Icknield Way led to its prosperity as a market town and as a centre for the wool trade.

Stevenage

Stevenage lies just off the A1 (M) motorway in Hertfordshire. Although most of the town’s development and growth occurred from the mid-20th Century onwards, there is evidence of much Roman activity in the area dating back over 2000 years.

Bishop’s Stortford

Bishop’s Stortford is a small market town in Hertfordshire, on the Herts/Essex border. The town was important during the Roman occupation of Britain, due to its location on the road between St Albans and Colchester; today Stansted Airport is the town’s most important feature.

Welwyn Garden City

Built soon after the first world war by Sir Ebenezer Howard as a “satellite” town to help ease poor and overcrowded living conditions in London. Welwyn Garden lies approximately 23 miles from central London and is easily accessible via the A1(M).

Hatfield

Hatfield is one of Hertfordshire’s major towns, and due to its road and rail links is a commuter town for London. The magnificent Hatfield House is situated just outside the town, but most of the expansion and growth of the town occurred during the 20th Century.

Watford

Watford is one of Hertfordshire’s largest towns, and is located towards the south west of the county, within the M25 motorway. The town’s football team have made occasional appearances in the English Premiership over the years, and have long been associated with singer Elton John.

Hemel Hempstead

Hemel Hempstead is one of Hertfordshire’s major towns, and is just outside the M25. Although there are some handsome old buildings, most of Hemel Hempstead dates from the late 20th Century, when it grew as one of the Uk’s New Towns.
