Opened in May 2002, this adventurous £3million project by the National Trust for Scotland tells visitors about the history and ecology of the unique and fascinating Glencoe region using interactive displays. The building itself is designed to be unobtrusive and have a low environmental impact and has won awards for its unique design.

Described as one of the Great Railway Journeys of the World you too can enjoy some of the most breathtaking and beautiful scenery in Scotland. There really is no better way to enjoy the wild beauty and history of the West Highlands.

Harry Potter and the Jacobite meet. The film "Harry Potter & The Chamber of Secrets" used part of the route on which the Jacobite runs. The scene of "Hogwarts Express" traveling across a viaduct with a blue Ford Anglia flying around the train was filmed on the Glenfinnan Viaduct, some 16 miles west of Fort William.

The Jacobite Steam train operates from Fort William to Mallaig Monday to Friday 16th June to 3rd October Sundays 27th July to 31st August. All trains depart 10:20 and return at 16:00pm. It really is a great day out for all the family.

 


Inverlochy Castle

The original Inverlochy Castle, not to be confused with the much later hotel of the same name, was built in the 13 th Century and is one of Scotland’s earliest stone castles. Despite being superseded by Oliver Cromwell’s fortified citadel in 1654, Inverlochy Castle outlasted its replacement and today its complete, albeit ruined structure stands firm and proud.

With the coming of the British Aluminium Company to Lochleven in 1904, the region was transformed, with the spectacular eight mile long Blackwater Reservoir being built and used to generate electricity for the smelting of aluminium. After the demise of the works in 2000 a visitor centre took its place, using imaginative interactive displays to tell the story of aluminium production and hydroelectricity.

Stronghold of the Chiefs of McLeod for over 800 years, Dunvegan Castle is an imposing landmark on the island’s skyline. The 14th Century keep, 15th Century tower and a hall built in the 17th Century have been continuously occupied by the chiefs of the clan MacLeod since at least 1270, longer than any other family castle in Scotland. Today, the castle is open to the public and artefacts such as the Fairy Flag of Dunvegan, Rory Mor’s drinking horn, and interesting memorabilia relating to Bonnie Prince Charlie are testament to the castle’s proud historic importance.

The Isle of Skye Brewery opened in December 1995 in purpose-built premises at Uig. Skye beers are exported to Japan, Finland, Iceland, Sweden, Denmark and Spain and have been recognised in several awards at beer festivals and elsewhere throughout the UK as well as abroad.
