Hotel du Vin can be found in Brighton’s chic, stylish Lanes; a conservation area of this historic seaside city, and a mere stone’s throw from the seafront. It is the perfect base from which to experience the culture, the shopping, the architecture, entertainment and the vibrant nightlife for which Brighton is so famous. The magnificent, if somewhat eccentric, collection of mock Tudor buildings was built by a wine merchant on the site of a former inn. Appropriate, perhaps, given Hotel du Vin’s relentless and enthusiastic approach to wine and conviviality.
Brighton began its extraordinary life in Saxon times. The notable Saxon Beorthelm established a farm, or tun, on the site, and subsequently Beorthelm’s tun became Brighton. Brighton grew into a farming, fishing and market town but suffered a terrible setback when it was burned down by the marauding French in the 16th Century. Equally, the wars with the French and the Dutch 100 years later caused a decline in the fishing industry, so important to the town’s economy. Brighton’s fortunes took a great upturn from the late 18th Century, however, when it became popular for the upper classes to bathe in sea water for the good of their health. Brighton’s popularity as a seaside resort led to a drastic and dramatic increase in its size and population, and as the town entered the Victorian era, many of its historical landmarks were already beginning to appear. Throughout the 19th and early 20th Centuries, Brighton continued to grow and to this day it remains one of the UK’s premier seaside resorts. Brighton and Hove was made a city in 2000 and its bohemian, chic appeal continues.
Hotel du Vin is a landmark in its own right in the wonderfully preserved Lanes, an intricate and winding warren of cobbled lanes that can trace its history for well over 400 years. The hotel’s persona is perfectly synchronous with that of the surrounding area, with style and genuine sophistication, fascinating character and charm. All of the rooms have been designed with flair and are both supremely stylish and satisfyingly comfortable. Attention to detail, as one would expect from Hotel du Vin, is impeccable and the rooms are equipped with an array of facilities to satisfy the most demanding of guests, whether they visit for business or pleasure.
