Hotel du Vin is in the centre of historic Winchester. It occupies a landmark Georgian building that dates from 1715. During its conversion to the stylish hotel of today, great care was taken to preserve the wonderful original character and charm. Hotel du Vin have successfully created one of the most beautiful hotels in this atmospheric town.
There is evidence of settlement in the Winchester area dating back to pre-Roman times, as well as considerable amounts of Iron Age artefacts that suggest that the area was heavily fortified in this era. The town, then called Venta Belgarum, was of great importance during the Roman occupation, and following the departure of the Romans, became the capital of the ancient kingdom of Wessex. King Alfred the Great established Winchester as the main city of Wessex, and the town served as the capital of England for some time, until after the Norman Conquest when London took over the role.
Winchester possesses one of the country’s most magnificent cathedrals; much of the current structure was put in place during the 14 th Century. Winchester College was also founded around this time. The ancient Pilgrim's Way starts at Winchester running eventually to Canterbury. Many of today’s visitors to the city arrive on the promise of wonderful history, heritage and architecture, and Winchester rarely disappoints in that respect.
Hotel du Vin is in a remarkable building, its persona fits in well with that of its surrounding area. It exudes charm, character, history and style. The impressive rooms at Hotel du Vin have all been designed and executed with flair and passion. The rooms are attractive, functional and satisfyingly comfortable, and the attention to detail is first rate. The host of facilities on offer in each room will satisfy even the most demanding of guests, whether they visit for business or pleasure.
As is the Hotel du Vin group’s trademark, the Bistro is the centrepiece. It offers a superb menu of classic dishes, revitalised and given a contemporary twist. The ambience of the Bistro is cool and relaxed, and is the ideal venue for that special meal. The splendid Champagne Bar is a sophisticated venue in which to enjoy Hotel du Vin’s trademark range of wines, champagnes, whiskies, cognacs, bourbons and cigars.
