Situated in Newby Bridge, Cumbria, the Aquarium of the Lakes is an award-winning freshwater aquarium, with over 30 wonderful displays featuring the country's largest collection of freshwater fish. There are also mischievous otters and diving ducks, while visitors can walk on a recreation of the lake bed of Windermere in the Lake District's only underwater tunnel.

The famous Cartmel racecourse is situated close to the centre of the village. The Priory is open every day except during services. Guided tours are available on Wednesdays in the Summer.

Dove Cottage was the home of Romantic poet William Wordsworth between 1799 and 1808. The cottage has been beautifully preserved and visitors can explore the fascinating nooks and crannies with a guided tour. The award-winning Wordsworth Museum features a unique collection of manuscripts, books and paintings pertaining to Wordsworth’s life and works, and the enchanting garden is open when the weather permits. In addition, there are special exhibitions at the museum throughout the year as well as a programme of special events.

A fascinating shop sells books, gifts and local crafts, while The Dove Cottage Tea Room and Restaurant serves refreshments throughout the day.

Affectionately referred to as "La 'al Ratty", The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway opened in 1875 to carry iron ore to the Furness Railway. It started carrying passengers in 1876, and today still performs this role, a fleet of beautiful steam locomotives pulling open carriages through the most dramatic Lakeland scenery. Eskdale Mill dates from 1578, and is one of only a very few remaining two wheel water corn mills in existence. Visitors can learn about life in Cumbria, its industry and its people, through fascinating exhibitions, including a description of the milling process and how the wooden machinery’s unique workings operate.
