The tiny La Rioja region of Spain is most famous and popular for its top class wines which find their way around the rest of the world. It takes up its position in the north of the Iberian country and is the second smallest autonomous community, smaller even than the Canary Islands, and taking up just one per cent of the total area of this vast land.

The region’s fertile plains are conducive to the production of grapes for wine and this largely shapes the local economy. Also giving the 310,000-strong population jobs are the likes of the agriculture, textile, footwear, rubber and plastics industries. Wine even flows through into the tourism industry with many visitors venturing to the region in pursuit of the beverage in conjunction with a walk or two through the mountains and plains.

La Rioja La Rioja borders the neighbouring Spanish communities of Navarre, Aragon, Castile and Leon and the Basque Country. It features peaks of up to 2,300 metres in the Demanda Sierra Mountains and has Spain’s longest river the River Ebro running through, as well as the River Ojo (Ria Ojo in Spanish) which some suggest is where the community draws its name from. On the whole La Rioja has a Mediterranean climate and during the winter feels the strength of the cierzo wind.

As well as mountain scenery the land is home to a number of World Heritage sites and thermal waters. Meanwhile, visitors to the region are able to make the most of skiing, white water rafting and hiking opportunities too, with the likes of the Way of Saint James making its way through La Rioja. Part of the culture is the popular jota dance, the oboe-like dulzania instrument and the dish caparrones. Also widely produced and much used are ingredients such as artichokes, asparagus, peaches, baby goat, red sausage, sweet red peppers and potatoes.
