Kirkstall Abbey dates from 1152, and is one of the UK’s best-preserved Cistercian Abbeys. After being founded by Cistercian monks in the 12 th Century, it was closed as a religious monastery in 1539, during Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries, at which time its elaborate windows and stonework were removed and used in local architectural projects, giving it a somewhat eerie ruined appearance today. Kirkstall Abbey also features beautiful grounds, making this a great family day out.
The Abbey and grounds are open throughout the year.
