Constructed during the 13th century on King’s Island in the heart of Medieval Limerick, St John’s Castle contains a number of animations and interactive displays narrating the history of the castle. Offering panoramic views of the River Shannon, the castle also contains a historical exhibition, a reconstruction of the Medieval courtyard, excavated pre-Norman houses and King John’s Mint where visitors can collect replicas of original coins.

Founded in 1168 incorporating elements of the palace of Donal Mor O'Brien King of Munster which had previously stood on the site, St Mary’s Cathedral is the oldest and most historic building in Limerick. It is believed to have been used as a stable by Cromwellian forces in 1651, while the stones surrounding the West Door were used by Limerick’s defenders to sharpen their swords throughout the city’s long history, leaving marks that can be seen to this day.

Containing more than 2,000 artefacts from stone-age Ireland to ancient Egypt, the Hunt Museum may be small but is nevertheless impressive. The most famous pieces contained in the museum are the Antrim Cross, a 9th century bronze and enamel cross, a small sketching by Picasso and a bronze horse designed by Leonardo da Vinci.

The Treaty Stone

It was on the Treaty Stone that the treaty ending the war between the forces of King William III and James II was signed in 1691. The treaty was one of the most significant in British and Irish history and as a result occupies a symbolic role in the Irish mindset.

Constructed during the 1830s, many of the walls that surround the Market Quarter are Limerick’s original city walls. The Market Quarter was restored to its former glory in 1994 and is now home to traders selling all manner of local produce and arts and craft, with street entertainers and buskers creating something of a carnival atmosphere.
