Lincoln Cathedral is one of England’s most recognisable landmarks, and is also one of Europe’s most magnificent examples of Gothic architecture. The grand Norman structure has dominated the Lincoln skyline since work began on it in 1072 and, due in part to the flatness of the area and the sheer size of the building, Lincoln Cathedral is clearly visible within a 20 mile radius. Recently, Lincoln Cathedral has enjoyed a dramatic increase in visitor numbers thanks to its role in the Dan Brown novel ‘The Da Vinci Code’.

Set in the heart of Lincoln’s historic city centre, Lincoln Castle is an impressive stone-built motte and bailey castle that was built in the 11th Century on the site of a much earlier Roman fortress. A distinctive feature is the massive curtain wall, as well as the two gates and towers. There is also a much later building in which one of the original Magna Carta documents is kept, and guided tours of this magnificent fortress are available.

The Lincolnshire Road Transport Museum is home to a wonderful collection of vehicles from the earliest days of motoring to more recent times, and includes over 65 vintage vehicles, buses and commercial vehicles. There are also cars, buses, motorbikes and bicycles as well as memorabilia and a traditional workshop.

Doddington Hall, near Lincoln, is a grand Elizabethan manor house that dates from 1600. It was designed by famous architect Robert Smythson, and remains remarkably unchanged to this day, complete with many original features such as the beautiful walled gardens, gatehouse and even a chapel. The interior of Doddington Hall contains a superb collection of artworks and furniture; guided tours are available.

Belton House was built during the 1680s, although it was substantially altered at a later date by James Wyatt. A particularly handsome example of Restoration architecture, Belton House also features a superb interior with ornate plasterwork, as well as important collections of paintings, furniture, tapestries and silverware. The substantial grounds contain formal gardens, an orangery and an adventure playground that children will love.

Belvoir Castle near Grantham is a handsome castle set in beautiful grounds, and also houses an impressive collection of artworks. The original castle was built by the Normans in the 11th Century, and is now the home of the Duke of Rutland, with a collection of period furniture and paintings by Gainsborough, Reynolds and Poussin amongst others. The grounds and gardens are open to pre-booked groups.

 
 

Aviation Heritage Centre

The Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby Airfield makes a fascinating day out for the whole family, and offers an array of aeroplanes and memorabilia from the Second World War. The museum is also home to a working AVRO Lancaster bomber – the magnificent Rolls Royce Merlin engines are frequently started up, and taxi runs are provided around the airfield. There is also a café and gift shop, as well as a maze made from maize.

Founded in 1927, with the bequest of a truly outstanding collection of artworks, The Usher Gallery has long been regarded as one of the finest in the country. There are superb displays of clocks, watches, porcelain, enamels, miniatures and silver, as well as a collection of fine art with paintings, prints, drawings and sculpture from the 17th Century to the present.
