Since the consecration of the abbey 0n 28 December 1065, the coronation of every english monarch has been held here, with the excemption of the two uncrowned kings, Edward V and Edward VIII. It is also the burial place of all English monarchs from the time of Henry III, to whom we owe rebuilding in early English style of most of the abbey, to the reign of George III.Their tombs, particularly that of Edward the Confessor and that of HenryVII, housed in the beautiful, fan-vaulted chapel he had built in the early 16th century, are magnificent, but outnumbered by the thousands or so monuments to the great and famous. Poet's corner is the best known section, where many distinguished writers are remembered.
