Lower Slaughter Manor Hotel can be found in the tranquil village of Lower Slaughter in the heart of the Cotswolds. A magnificent 17 th Century manor house standing in beautifully manicured grounds, Lower Slaughter Manor Hotel is an elegant and charming country retreat ideal for a break to get away from the stresses and strains of modern life, and to take in the delightful surroundings of The Cotswolds – one of England’s most cherished rural destinations.

Lower Slaughter is a beautiful little village so typical of those found in The Cotswolds; its characteristic rambling buildings hewn from mellow limestone, picture postcard views, quintessential English charm and secluded location in gentle green rolling scenery make it a honey pot for tourists, yet without the somewhat over-busy hustle and bustle of nearby Bourton-on-the-Water; the best of both worlds perhaps. The name of the villages of Lower and Upper Slaughter, collectively known as ‘The Slaughters’, may sound slightly brutal for such a delightful and tranquil part of the world, but worry not – the name is thought to derive from the name of the Norman Knight Philip de Sloitre, in whose ownership the land around the village of ‘Sclostre’ appeared in the Domesday Book of 1085.

A manor house is believed to have stood on the site of today’s Lower Slaughter Manor from even before the Norman Conquest of 1066, and the current handsome building was commissioned by the High Sheriff of Gloucestershire in 1655. Designed by prominent stonemason Valentine Strong, Lower Slaughter Manor was built for the princely sum of £200, replacing the previous manor house, which had until Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries been used as a convent. The only surviving link with Lower Slaughter Manor’s monastic past is the convent’s dovecot, which still stands today. Lower Slaughter Manor has undergone gradual evolution over the centuries, but many of the handsome original features remain, and the conversion of the property into an elegant and luxurious 16-bedroom manor house hotel has not detracted from the character or charm in any way. Lower Slaughter Manor Hotel is an AA Top 200 Hotel with 3 coveted red stars, ranking it alongside not only the finest hotels in The Cotswolds, but in the whole of the UK.
