With a magnificent natural setting amidst the snow-capped mountains of the Alps and the picturesque serenity of Lake Lucerne, Lucerne has long enjoyed a reputation as one of Europe’s chicest and most exclusive tourist destinations. The city has attracted the rich and famous since the 19th century, when Queen Victoria and Mark Twain were among Lucerne’s most notable guests, drawn by its majestic beauty and magnificent Old Town.
As the gateway to central Switzerland, to this day Lucerne has remained one of Switzerland’s premier tourists resorts. Nevertheless, the city has retained the old world charm that made it so popular. Among the many reasons for the city’s popularity is its setting for the legend of William Tell when he shot an apple off his son’s head.
The city sits astride the River Reuss, which winds its way through the city before flowing into the north-west corner of Lake Lucerne. Strolling along the river bank is one of the highlights of a visit to Lucerne, flanked as it is by a stunning array of ancient guildhalls, medieval squares, churches, chapels and frescoed houses, underlining the city’s age and illustrious heritage. Lucerne is also home to a great number of fascinating sites and museums, including the 14th century Chapel Bridge, the Swiss History Museum, the Picasso Museum and the Wagner Museum. Alternatively, visitors can take a wander around the city’s medieval battlements, or explore its network of cobbled alleys and garden courtyards.
But while Lucerne may boast a tangibly historic ambience, it is by no means simply a sleepy tourist resort. As the largest city in central Switzerland it is home to a large and dynamic population of young people, producing a vibrant and lively atmosphere that belies its age. Lucerne is home to a host of outdoor cafes, bars, restaurants and clubs, offering visitors an entertainment scene of such life and vigour to rival that of many larger European cities. And with one of the world’s most magnificent natural settings amidst the craggy peaks of the Alps and the clear blue waters of Lake Lucerne, few visitors fail to be charmed by this most historic and hedonistic of Swiss cities.
