The feeling of history and heritage is strong at Lucknam Park. The village of Lucknam itself is thought to have origins dating back to the Anglo-Saxon period, and there are records of a farmhouse having existed on the site of the current house from the late 12 th to the late 17 th Century. The site was purchased by one James Wallis, a wealthy merchant from Bristol, in 1688. He commissioned the building of the magnificent manor house at around the turn of the century; hewn from characteristic local limestone, the distinctive architecture of the house evolved over the years, as first the pillared portico and then the handsome bowed wings were added. The grand manor house changed hands many times over the centuries, and its intriguing history is worthy of a lengthier text than can be provided here. Sadly, by the second half of the 20 th Century, the house had fallen into disrepair, but through considerable foresight and devotion, and no little investment, Lucknam Park was revitalised and transformed into the magnificent luxury hotel of today.
