Lumley Castle Hotel is set in the magnificent 14 th Century castle in County Durham, and the castle takes the name of its creator Sir Ralph Lumley, a Northumbrian soldier who played a key role in the defence of Berwick-upon-Tweed and the Battle of Otterburn. Lumley Castle Hotel is situated conveniently close to Chester-le-Street and the home of Durham County Cricket Club, while its proximity to the A167 and the A1M mean it is easy to reach the historic North East cities of Durham, Sunderland and Newcastle.
Lumley Castle truly is a hotel like no other. The essential spirit and character of the majestic castle have been retained while at the same time providing levels of comfort and style that place Lumley Castle Hotel amongst the top hotels in the North of England. The castle dates from 1389; a manor house previously stood on the site, but was converted to a castle. The border regions of England were a turbulent place in the Middle Ages, and the marauding Scots from the north were a constant threat. This is reflected in the large numbers of castles in the North East dating from this period, of which Lumley Castle is one of the most well-preserved. The Lumley family themselves had something of a turbulent history: Sir Ralph and his son were executed in 1400 for their part in an attempted overthrowing of Henry IV. Lumley Castle spent time in the hands of The Earl of Somerset, before being returned to its rightful owner, Thomas Lumley, in 1421. Thomas played a prominent role in The War of the Roses, including the siege of Bamburgh Castle. The Lumley family continued to dominate the history and politics of the North East until the 19 th Century. By the 1970s Lumley Castle was looking a shadow of its former magnificent self, but its transformation to a first class hotel has once more elevated the Lumley name to world renown.
Lumley Castle Hotel makes a superb base from which to discover the remarkable history and beauty of the North East of England. Each of the bedchambers is uniquely decorated and full of Medieval character and charm, and the hotel also offers dining with a real difference, with Elizabethan Banquets or more conventional dining in the Black Knights Restaurant. There are impressive conference facilities at Lumley Castle, as well as one of County Durham’s most romantic settings for weddings and wedding receptions. The castle is filled with historical artefacts and possesses a strong atmosphere of history and intrigue, and is thought to have its own resident ghost – Lily of Lumley, who was murdered in the castle in the 14 th Century.
