Situated between Paris and Marseille Lyon is the third largest city in France and a major centre for business and commerce. Lyon is the capital of the Rhône department and the beautiful Rhône-Alpes region in east central France, famous for its pretty scenery, fine wines and historic sites; Lyon encompasses all of these things. Located at the meeting point of two of Europe’s most beautiful rivers, the Rhône and the Saône, Lyon is home to good food, culture and history, which is especially abundant around Vieux or Old Lyon now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here narrow cobbled streets are lined with tiny restaurants and independent boutiques, and sights such as the Cathédrale St-Jean reveal the city’s complex history. The newer areas of Lyon around the urbanised Part-Dieu quarter are home to modern shopping centres, rail terminals and the headquarters of many international businesses, and as many of the city’s best hotels are just 30 minutes drive from the international airport Lyon is a popular location for conferences and business events.
Lyon is renowned as the gastronomic capital of France and the spiritual home of traditional French cooking. Eating and creating food in Lyon is considered inherent to the enjoyment of life making it the perfect destination for gastronomes and cooking enthusiasts. Today in the city’s many traditional ‘bouchons’ speciality dishes of Lyon sausages, pike quenelles and Bresse poultry, are served up in hearty portions and accompanied by bottles of fine Côtes du Rhône wines. Alongside these traditional brasseries Lyon is also home to high-end Michelin starred restaurants, cosy inns and international-themed dining rooms. Take a wander around any of Lyon’s many markets and the senses are overwhelmed by colours and smells as traders ply shoppers with piles of the freshest vegetables, fragrant spices and locally made cheeses.
Lyon offers much more to visitors than historic churches and French food, it is a cosmopolitan city with a thriving arts scene, superb nightlife and attractions that will appeal to anyone whatever their interests. Whether you want to explore the history of film at the Musée Lumière, which celebrates Lyon as the birthplace of modern cinema, or visit the Tête d’Or Park with the children, everybody will find a part of Lyon that they will always remember.
