Malmaison hotels are characterised by their highly stylised guestrooms – individual, luxurious and contemporary – offering something a bit different to the average four-star hotel room. At the Malmaison Reading guestrooms are decorated with chunky dark wood headboards and moody lighting.

Consideration is given to every detail, extending to power showers, adjustable lighting beyond the standard ‘bedside lamp’, and CD players with their own CD library supplied.

The Malmaison Reading Hotel – the newest addition to the Malmaison portfolio – opened for business this summer marking yet another hotel added to the Malmaison group’s impressive line up of chic and funky boutique hotels. The development has successfully brought a touch of elegance to the town centre by restoring a former Reading landmark to its glamorous best.

Situated directly opposite busy Reading Station the Malmaison group has redeveloped Great Western House, formerly the much-loved Great Western Hotel. The Grade II listed building was certainly in need of renovation; fortunately the Malmaison group has proved time and time again to have a flair for regenerating historic buildings. In fact many of their other hotels – Oxford, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Birmingham, London, Belfast and Manchester - were highly successful restoration projects. Now Great Western House has also been returned to its former glamorous glory courtesy of Malmaison.

Originally built as the Great Western Hotel in 1844 Great Western House is reputed to be the oldest surviving railway hotel in the world. It was designed in collaboration with the great Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, pioneer of the Great Western Railway. In its long history the hotel welcomed many of the most distinguished visitors to Reading, including on several occasions Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Tragically a fire in the mid 1960s swept through the 11-storey building, destroying much of its interior; since the incident the building had been used as offices. Malmaison has thankfully brought the hotel right up to date with a chic bar, an alluring brasserie restaurant and designer guestrooms. A new eleven-storey element creates a contemporary backdrop setting for the restored historic building.
