Nestled amid beautiful surrounding landscape in west Germany lies the city of Mannheim where the rivers Rhine and Neckar come together. It is a particularly green city with many outdoor leisure areas in the city centre alone, while to the north and south there are wooded areas which are well within reach. The city, which celebrated its 400th birthday in 2007, is rich in culture and heritage thanks in part to the culture mile with its outdoor sculptures a particular draw for visitors during the year.

Mannheim is located on the piece of landscape between the Palatinate and the Odenwald in the western part of Germany. It rests where three federal states – Baden-Württemburg, Hesse and the Rhineland-Palatinate – join up and so offers easy access to each neighbouring region. It is the former of the states that this 330,000 strong city is to be found in and is the second largest city in the region after Stuttgart.

The area in and around the Rhine and the Neckar is a large industrial region, something which affects the nature of Mannheim. A Mannheimnumber of businesses and companies, such as Siemens and DaimlerChrysler have bases there, while the city also has a reputation for being a good destination for meetings, conferences and exhibitions. Indeed, the Maimarkt consumer fair welcomes some 400,000 visitors each year and a vast number of exhibitors in addition.

The centre of Mannheim focuses around a gridded layout of roads, houses and shops. The Planken pedestrianised area is home to a number of cafes among other things as it works its way through the heart of the city, while also nearby is the landmark water tower (pictured). The mile long Kulturmeile is another hotspot for visitors in particular with its selection of museums, galleries, theatres and other cultural highlights. Here visitors to the city will find the likes of the National Theatre, the Reiss Museum, the State Museum for Technology and Work and the Rosengarten Concert Hall.

As already mentioned there are plenty of outdoor green areas to visit. For example, there is the Reiss-Insel nature reserve, the Herzogenriedpark and the Luisenpark which all go to blend in well with the scenic surrounding landscape.

Mannheim features a university along with several other educational institutions which together are home to some 24,000 students. The city also has a reputation for having a tradition of music, with its concert halls and its history of having welcomed a number of top composers over the years. Another significant feature of the city is the annual International Film Festival Mannheim-Heidelberg which has taken place since 1951.
