The Montagu Arms Hotel in Beaulieu is an atmospheric and characterful hotel set in the beautiful surroundings of the New Forest. Tucked away in tranquil seclusion, yet so easy to get to, The Montagu Arms Hotel is ideal for a relaxing break to get away from the stresses of modern life and to experience the pleasures of life at a more leisurely pace. Currently holding three coveted AA red stars - placing it amongst the top 200 hotels in the UK – The Montagu Arms Hotel has in its eventful 200 year history established itself as a luxurious, charming country retreat with a firm emphasis on customer care and satisfaction, and is the ideal base from which to explore the enchanting and beautiful New Forest.
The sense of history is tangible throughout The New Forest; the area was commandeered by William the Conqueror in 1079 for use as a deer hunting forest for the King and his licensees, and the Court of the Verderers, a body established to uphold Forest Law is still in existence today. Ancient traditions still live on here; the rights of commoners to turn out their cattle into the Forest to graze openly are still upheld, and the ponies and donkeys roaming the New Forest is a charming and familiar sight. Many of the ships in Lord Admiral Nelson’s fleet were built from New Forest timber; HMS Illustrious and Agamemnon were built not far from Beaulieu, in the shipyards at Bucklers Hard.
Of course, The Montagu Arms Hotel also has its own fascinating story to tell, having been a prominent feature of the picturesque village of Beaulieu for over 200 years. There has been an inn on the site of The Montagu Arms since the 16 th Century, named successively The Ship then The George, then in 1742 it took on its current title. The inn became a meeting place for local farmers and parish officers, and was used for timber auctions and lectures. An annual cattle market was held on the site until 1809, and the inn even had its own farmland. The annual Beaulieu fairs originating from 1607 were held here as well as weekly markets. Today’s Montagu Arms Hotel dates mostly from the late 1880s when the inn’s original façade was replaced with the current brick and timber structure. Another wing was added to the building in 1925, completing the appearance of The Montagu Arms Hotel as we know it today. Many of the original features and all of the original charm are preserved, and a sense of timelessness and quintessential English charm pervades every room, and every nook and cranny.
