Navarre is located in the northern part of Spain and shares a border with France. Its terrain covers the mountains of the Pyrenees in the north and the plains of the Ebro Valley to the south. Its government has a particularly wide range of competencies, unusually including control over taxes; meanwhile it aims to reach 100 per cent renewable energy use by the year 2010.

As well as bordering France to the north, Navarre also borders Aragon, La Rioja and the Basque Country while it has an enclave called Petilla de Aragon which is completely engulfed by Aragon. It is a fairly sparsely populated region with just 600,000 inhabitants, making it Spain’s third smallest in terms of population. The capital city is Pamplona and before becoming known as the Kingdom of Navarre the region was in fact named after its current major city.

NavarreThe Navarrese speak Spanish in the main but Basque is also widely spoken due to its historical links with the neighbouring Basque Country. The rather energetic jota dance is popular in the region, as are red berets which a number of people are seen to wear. Many people head to Navarre, and particularly capital Pamplona, for the famous Fiesta de San Fermin which sees a bull run through the streets among other things. The region is conducive to walking, fishing and shooting, while the ball game Pelota is also a hit with the locals.

In times gone by the region was very important as a link between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of the continent. Further, it provided a useful route through part of the Pyrenees and so was a particularly strategic target among some groups. The mountainous areas tend to be more wet, but the southern, flatter part of the community is more humid on the whole. The region is good for growing items such as wheat and vegetables while it is also well-known for its wine and its olive trees.
