Newcastle has emerged as one of the UK’s most popular destinations for city breaks, and aside from its renowned nightlife and its plethora of pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants, part of the city’s renaissance as a tourist venue is due to its excellent shopping facilities.
Newcastle is quite simply a paradise for shoppers, with every conceivable genre of shops available; from the big High Street names and department stores such as Bainbridge’s and Fenwick’s to the designer fashions on Grey Street and High Bridge, and the specialist shops that are dotted around the city centre.
Newcastle also has a good selection of indoor and outdoor markets such as the Grainger Market and the Greenmarket, as well as the splendid Victorian Central Arcade, and in Eldon Square Shopping Centre Newcastle also boasts extensive indoor shopping. Just a short journey down the A1 on the other side of the River Tyne is the world-famous Metro Centre – one of the largest indoor shopping centres in Europe, and a magnet for shoppers from all over the country as well as, most notably, Scandinavia.
