Nice is a leading holiday resort on the French Riviera and France’s fifth largest city. Situated between Marseille and Genoa Nice’s location on the beautiful Azure Coast means that the town is typified by towering palms, sparkling blue sea, rugged beaches and seafront boulevards. Yet whilst Cannes and St Tropez remain the desirable preserve of the rich and famous the population of Nice is now much more diverse with the city embracing tourists whatever budget they have at their disposal. Eternally popular as a holiday destination, during the peak season the city’s population can be expected to double as French and international visitors flock to experience the café terraces, sandy beaches, colourful markets and picturesque buildings that characterise Nice.

Thanks to its unique position on the Mediterranean coast and its varied history Italy, Spain and most recently North Africa have influenced the culture of Nice. This manifests itself in the city’s food, language and folk traditions, which remain strong in the face of growth. Throughout Nice’s lively neighbourhoods locally made products are sold in shops, artworks are displayed in galleries and traditional cuisine is served up in restaurants. Nice’s Old Town along Cours Saleya and around the Vieux Port area is a good place to start an exploration of the city. The glitz and glamour that characterise some of the Riviera’s other cities is less evident here but the appeal is in the history, relaxed pace and authenticity of the crooked houses, narrow lanes and worn fishing boats. It is also here that you will find some unusual sights such as the somewhat surprising Cathédrale St-Nicolas, a Russian Orthodox Chruch that seems as though it might be plucked straight from the streets of St Petersburg itself. For centuries Nice’s spectacular natural beauty and relaxed pace have seduced artists and writers many of whom are paid testament in the city today by world class art galleries and museums. The hilltop Cimiez district is a particularly affluent and well kept part of Nice where many of the most well known museums are located, among the notable are the Museum dedicated to Chagall and the Musée Matisse, which frequently attract art enthusiasts and historians from across Europe.

Nice has an ideal Mediterranean climate being temperate and sunny with year round blue skies, sparkling seas and enviable hours of sunshine. However the city also has its own distinct personality forged by a turbulent history and a diverse population, which makes it especially appealing as a tourist destination. Nice has a world of nightlife, shopping and history to discover and makes an excellent base for exploring the Riviera thanks to an international airport, excellent public transport links and a remarkably close proximity to many of Italy’s coastal towns.
