The Triangular Lodge, near Rushton in Northamptonshire, is an unusually shaped building with only three sides. It dates from the 1590s and was designed by Sir Thomas Tresham, with the theme of the number three (three sides, three floors, three triangular gables) apparently deriving from his staunch Catholicism – the number three of course symbolising the Holy Trinity.

Kelmarsh Hall, a few miles to the south of Market Harborough on the Northants/Leicestershire border, dates from 1732 and is a magnificent example of Palladian style architecture. It sits at the heart of a working estate, with mature parkland and beautifully tended gardens. The house was once the home of Nancy Lancaster, who was responsible for Kelmarsh Hall’s classic décor. The grounds are used for historic military re-enactments and special events during the summer months.
