Northumberland may be one of England’s most sparsely populated regions, yet there are still plenty of opportunities for shopping. While the big names and familiar high street brands may not be so well represented (try Newcastle) and the Metro Centre at Gateshead for award-winning shopping), there are plenty of smaller, more intimate shops dotted around the county, in particular in the traditional market towns such as Hexham, Alnwick and Berwick-upon-Tweed. These towns also benefit from frequent markets, which offer the ideal opportunity to pick up a bargain, peruse the selection of hand-made wares or buy some fresh local produce. The towns of Ashington, Cramlington and Blyth also offer their own shopping centres, but nothing on the scale of Newcastle’s celebrated city centre.
