The North York Moors is an area of outstanding natural beauty and was designated a National Park in 1952. Covering an area of 554 square miles, the North York Moors is the fourth largest of the UK’s National Parks, and its variety of terrain and landscapes is what makes it such an enchanting place. The region contains England’s largest area of heather clad moorland and the kaleidoscope of colour gives a dramatic quality to the landscape whatever time of year you visit. The region also comprises over 30 miles of fabulous coastline, with some of England’s highest rocky cliffs as well as golden sandy beaches and delightful little fishing villages dotted along the shore. The seaside destinations of Scarborough, Filey and Whitby remain ever popular, with the latter in particular providing mystical intrigue with its links to Bram Stoker’s Gothic masterpiece ‘Dracula’. Cyclists, ramblers, horse riders and climbers find the North York Moors irresistible, with over 1,400 miles of paths and tracks taking in bleak fells, rolling dales and beautiful woodland and forests with varying levels of challenges for all abilities. The Cleveland Way takes in all of this terrain as it winds its way on a 110-mile journey around the North York Moors from Helmsley to Filey.
It’s not just the breathtaking scenery that makes the North York Moors so popular with the 10 million visitors who come here every year – the region possesses tremendous character and charm, and is steeped in fascinating history: the rich fossil remains and remnants of the Roman occupation of the area; the birthplace and home of Captain James Cook; and the host of ruined abbeys, priories and castles. The region is also full of quaint little villages, many of which still serve as the market places that they have for centuries. If you are looking for something with a slightly faster pace, Flamingoland the North of England’s number one theme park and zoo is not far, providing white-knuckle rides and entertainment for the whole family. It is this great variety packed into such a small area that makes the North York Moors National Park such an enduring favourite and gives the feeling that every time you return, you’ll discover something different.
