The area in which the venue is located was at one time marshland between the River Leen (now contained as the canal) and St. Mary's Cliff which is still visible on Cliff Road. This area has recorded history of settlement dating back to the 1300s but became more renowned in the 1600-1700s when it turned into Narrow Marsh, the worst slums in Nottingham. The Loggerheads was at the heart of this and hosted unimaginable activities for the likes of Dick Turpin and other feared highwaymen of the time, not to mention the prostitution. The only person to ever escape from the prison (The Galleries Of Justice) located above the premises was a woman who tied sheets together and absailed on to the roof of the venue. The saying "to be at Loggerheads" actually originates from the venue.
The modern Loggerheads known as "Nottingham's Best Kept Secret" has regular live music nights, a new food menu and a tour of the caves on site.
