Sherwood Forest was formerly a royal hunting forest, favoured by Norman kings, and was also of course the legendary home of the world’s most famous outlaw, Robin Hood. Today Sherwood Forest is valued as much for its ecological importance as its role in the mythological past of Nottinghamshire. Take time to enjoy the leafy splendour of the forest woodland trails and climb inside the famous Major Oak, which was reputedly used by Robin Hood as a hideout. There is also a Visitors’ Centre with exhibitions, two shops and the Forest Table Restaurant for light snacks and meals and the summer brings the annual Robin Hood Festival to Sherwood Forest.
