 Beatrix Potter Gallery
An annually changing exhibition of watercolours, illustrations and manuscripts by the celebrated children's author - just one of the many attractions dedicated to this pioneering Lake District lady.
 Kendal
Regarded as the southern gateway to the Lake District, Kendal has remained true to its character as a working town rather than a tourist centre. Arthur Ransome, author of the children's classic Swallows and Amazons, worked in Kendal and is featured in the town's museum. Kendal is also known for its mint cake, an extremely sugary peppermint flavoured snack.
 Brantwood
Home of John Ruskin (1872-1900) Brantwood is one of the most beautifully situated houses in the Lake District. It contains a superb collection of Ruskin's drawings, water colours and personal items, more of which can be seen in the nearby Ruskin Museum (usually open Apr-Nov). Coniston Water is also famous for the world-speed records that have been set there.
