If you want to be at the centre of Norwegian culture, business and cosmopolitan living, then Oslo is the destination for you. Oslo is one of the largest and greenest capital cities in the world. Located on the Oslo fjord, this city stretches uphill like an amphitheatre, covering a vast area of 453 square kilometres, although much of this forest. As a result, nature is a fundamental element of Oslo’s unique ambience.

The capital of Norway can trace its history back more than 1,000 years to 1048, although it did not become capital until 1300. A century later Norway became the junior partner in a union with Denmark, reducing Oslo’s role to one of a provincial administrative centre. The old city of Oslo was utterly destroyed in 1624, leading King Christian IV to rebuild the city across the bay and rename it Christiania. Following the dissolution of the union with Denmark Christiania once again became a national capital, regaining its status as a commercial and cultural centre. Many of the city’s most famous landmarks, including the Royal Palace and the Parliament, date from this period. The moniker of Oslo was not reapplied to the city until 1925.

OsloUp until the 1990s Oslo did not feature particularly highly on many travellers’ ‘must-visit’ list.  However, in the last 20 years the city has been transformed into one of the chicest and most elegant of European capitals. Today visitors are offered virtually limitless opportunities for entertainment, eating, drinking and shopping. Today Oslo is consistently lauded as one of the best places to live, but this comes at a price, and at the same time Oslo is also often listed as the most expensive place in the world to visit.

But while many activities in Oslo are expensive much of this magnificent city can be explored for free. Oslo is one of Europe’s most intensely forested cities, drawing thousands of Oslovians every summer for nature walks and picnics. Oslo fjord too provides a beautiful natural haven where visitors and locals alike flock to surf, sail and sunbathe. Come winter the crowds head for the slopes and indulge in some of Europe’s finest skiing. But whatever visitors are looking for, Oslo delivers in unique Nordic fashion.
