Make the most of your time in Oslo, use the information provided on this web site by clicking on the links above to plan your visit.

Oslo is one of the largest and greenest capital cities in the world. Located on the Oslo fjord, the city stretches uphill like an amphitheatre, covering a vast area of 453 square kilometres, although much of this forest. As a result, nature is a fundamental element of Oslo’s unique ambience.

The capital of Norway can trace its history back more than 1,000 years to 1048, although it did not become capital until 1300. A century later Norway became the junior partner in a union with Denmark, reducing Oslo’s role to one of a provincial administrative centre. The old city of Oslo was utterly destroyed in 1624, leading King Christain IV to rebuild the city across the bay and rename it Christiania. Following the dissolution of the union with Denmark Christiania once again became a national capital, regaining its status as a commercial and cultural centre. Many of the city’s most famous landmarks, including the Royal Palace and the Parliament, date from this period. Later the city was renamed Kristiania, before once again becoming Oslo in 1925.

Up until the 1990s Oslo was considered even by Scandinavians to be something of a backwater. However, in the last 20 years the city has been transformed into one of the chicest and most elegant of European capitals. Restaurants, nightclubs, cafes, and shopping complexes abound, offering visitors virtually limitless opportunities for entertainment. Visitors should be aware however that Oslo is one of the most expensive cities in the world, so anyone on a budget should tread carefully.

But while many activities in Oslo are expensive much of this magnificent city can be explored for free. Oslo is one of Europe’s most heavily forested cities, drawing thousands of Oslovians every summer for nature walks and picnics. Oslo fjord too provides a beautiful natural haven where visitors and locals alike flock to surf, sail and sunbathe. Come winter the crowds head for the slopes and indulge in some of Europe’s finest skiing. But whatever visitors are looking for, Oslo delivers in unique Nordic fashion.
