Paris is the world’s most frequently visited city, and is not only France’s capital, it is also a major international centre for culture, tourism and politics. The city stands astride the River Seine, towards the North East of France, and has evolved into a pulsating, iconic city of over 2 million inhabitants (11 million in the Île de France region, of which Paris is the capital). Paris is also regarded as one of the most romantic cities in the world, and its wealth of attractions, allied with its ease of access via rail, air and road, mean it is a popular destination for weekend breaks and longer holidays.

The region around what is now known as Paris was first inhabited by the Celtic Parisii tribe around 250BC; it is from these early settlers that Paris took its name, although it was known as Lutetia during the Roman occupation. Paris became the capital of France during the 10 th Century, and the city’s growth throughout the Middle Ages is reflected today in the many superb examples of architecture that still survive from this era, most notably the Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral and the Palace of Versailles. Paris was historically the seat of French monarchs, until in 1789 during the French Revolution the Bastille was stormed, since when France has been a republic. Much of Paris as it is known today was built during the 19 th Century: the Arc de Triomphe on the famous Champs Elysees was commissioned by Napoleon following his victory at Austerlitz in 1806; the Eiffel Tower – in many ways symbolic of the French capital and an icon of the French nation – was built as a temporary structure in 1889 to commemorate 100 years of the Revolution, and has stood there ever since; and the handsome Haussmann-style architecture, wide boulevards and expansive public gardens characterise central Paris. Yet the true appeal of Paris runs deeper than just its buildings; the city’s many wonderful museums and art galleries, the world-renowned theatres, the convivial nightlife and of course the trademark Parisian chic elegance and style give Paris a truly cosmopolitan feel, unmatched by any other city.
